The 175th Anniversary Celebration of the Air Itam Dam Tua Pek Kong Shrine
On 28 September 2026, Mr. Psusist Wongsurawat, Consul-General of Thailand in Penang, attended the "Cultural Night" event held at Air Itam Market. The event marked the 175th anniversary of the Air Itam Dam Tua Pek Kong Shrine and celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival. Consul-General attended at the invitation of Mr. Francis H’ng Boon Ping, Secretary-General of the Persatuan Penganut Dewa Tua Pek Kong Association, joining over 100 participants, including community leaders, distinguished guests, and local residents. The event featured cultural performances reflecting the community's diversity and harmonious coexistence of the people of Penang such as Chinese performing arts, Baba-Nyonya dance, Dhol drumming, and lion dances alongside a showcase of local cuisine set against a lively and friendly atmosphere.
The Tua Pek Kong Shrine was established in 1851 by early Hakka Chinese settlers in the Air Itam area, who built the shrine on a hillside for religious activities prior to the construction of the Air Itam Dam in 1962. The Tua Pek Kong Shrine has thus played a pivotal role in preserving the beliefs, traditions, and history of the Air Itam community over the past 175 years. Participation in this event reflects the close relationship between the Consulate-General and the local community, as well as support for the preservation of Penang’s invaluable historical and cultural heritage.
